About

THE GOAL

  1. to index every video on the web (from YouTube to iTunes, and everything in between).
  2. to help users find videos that matter to them.

We want to give users the best way to find all their online videos, from movies to TV shows, to the latest celebrity, sports, news, and viral videos.

CastTV is building a consumer destination site. We also license our video search technology to top brands.

HISTORY

  • Early 2006: CastTV is founded by husband and wife entrepreneurs, Edwin Ong and Alex Vikati, who had been working overseas and trying to keep up with Survivor and the Superbowl via web videos. They realized that finding videos online was painful and got excited about building a video search solution. Product development begins.
  • December 2006: CastTV secures its first customer: Gemstar - TV Guide.
  • April 2007: CastTV raises a $3.1M Series A from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and additional funding from angel investors including Ron Conway and Marc Andreesen. We’re also advised by Rajeev Motwani, Timothy Chou, and other notable industry veterans.
  • Currently: CastTV is in private beta and hiring entrepreneurial people who are passionate about the future of online video and building the best video search product to delight users.

MEET THE TEAM

Edwin Ong, CEO & Co-Founder
Edwin drives business and product strategy at CastTV, where he also directly manages product development. Edwin previously founded and built FileFish Inc., an enterprise software company that was acquired by Oracle in 2003, after which Edwin managed the integration of FileFish technology into various Oracle products. Prior to FileFish, Edwin was a product manager at CNET and an early employee at DoubleClick. Edwin graduated from the Symbolic Systems Program at Stanford and enjoys watching the hundreds of interpretations of the song “Umbrella” online. Edwin is hoping that Dexter’s move to CBS won’t affect the tone of the show.
Alex Vikati, President & Co-Founder
Alex runs operations, business development, and product management at CastTV. Alex is a second-time entrepreneur who previously founded FileFish Inc., an enterprise software company that was acquired by Oracle in 2003, after which Alex product-managed Oracle’s Content Services product, one of those leveraging FileFish technology. Prior to starting FileFish, Alex was the product manager at ThinkLink, a leading VoIP service provider that was acquired by Microsoft. Alex is a Stanford alum and holds a US patent in the area of proxy-based network access. She would gladly pay to watch NFL football and Entourage online. Or she would sit through beer commercials.
Kyle Maxwell, Software Architect
Kyle is responsible for search relevance and performance at CastTV, where he started as an application engineer before quickly proving his abilities in search architecture. Kyle previously developed web apps for startups and advertising agencies and became active in the Ruby community. Kyle has a BS in Physics from UCSD and a collection of bikes and skateboards for getting to work. He loves watching the video of his Nov07RubyConf talk (kidding! kidding!) and thinks that Funny or Die should Die!
Marie DeOrio, Strategic Growth Associate
Marie drives user evangelism and business operations at CastTV, where she enjoys working at an entertainment-focused technology company. Previously, she was on the entertainment side, working in the TV and Motion Picture departments at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles, where her interest in online video developed. Marie is a Duke alum and enjoys riding her bike around San Francisco and cooking. She used to watch Gossip Girl online (when the CW streamed episodes of the show). Now she watches food-related webisodes and would like to see Curb Your Enthusiasm make its way online and into CastTV’s Friday video lunch hour.
Mike Harville, Technologist
Mike works on signal processing at CastTV, where he translates image, audio, and video data into useful product features and improvements. Previously, Mike worked as a Research Scientist at Hewlett-Packard in the areas of computer vision, video/audio media analysis, and signal processing, for which he filed 40 patents (14 issued to date) and had 14 refereed external publications. Before HP, Mike worked at Interval Research Corp in similar areas. Mike has a Chemistry BS and Computer Science MS from Stanford and a Computation and Neural Systems MS from Caltech. Mike enjoys watching The Colbert Report and Chuck online.
Andrew Cantino, Software Engineer
Andrew is an entrepreneurial programmer with a strong academic background in machine learning and artificial intelligence that he puts to practical application at CastTV. He previously worked in the Gmail team at Google and has 10+ years of web development experience. He has a BS in Physics with a minor in CS from Haverford College and was a student in the CS PhD program at Georgia Tech. Andrew is an avid online TV watcher and is always happy to share his thoughts on the user experiences of TV network and aggregator sites. If you see someone fly by on a scooter on 3rd street, it’s probably him.
Joel Wood, Systems Engineer
Joel makes things scale at CastTV, where he wrangles hardware, software, indexes, and vendors. He has played a key role in systems administration and software development at his previous companies: Guba, nCircle, and Taos. Joel began his tech career by doing IT support to help put himself through school at the University of Oregon. Joel is a connoisseur of funny clips and short videos and enjoys bicycling, motorcycling, skiing and snowshoeing. He has yet to try snowshoeing to work at CastTV.
Min Chang, User Experience Director
Min is focused on creating an elegant and intuitive CastTV user experience. Before CastTV, Min was responsible for the direction and production of all creative output at Admission Corporation. Previously he held design, art direction, and information architecture roles at startups and ad agencies in California, Boston, and NYC. Min attended the Rhode Island School of Design and has won numerous awards for his design direction and information architecture expertise. No fighting for the remote in Min’s household, he gets his fix for Formula 1 and Major League Baseball online.
Brian Schroeder, Software Engineer
Brian is a programmer who has been going from coast to coast to pursue technical challenges. Originally from NY, Brian started interning for local startups there at 15. He moved to the Bay Area to study CS at UC Berkeley, where he was also the coxswain for the Cal crew team (undefeated national champions in 2004). After graduation, Brian worked as a Technology Analyst at Goldman Sachs in NY, only to realize he needed to return to San Francisco and join the startup scene. Brian is ready to stay put and enjoys watching TEDTalks and Arrested Development online.
